Avengers: Endgame Directors Promise The Stakes Will Be High

Following the massive tragedy that resulted from Thanos' reality altering snap in Infinity War, Earth's Mightiest Heroes sure do have their work cut out for them when it comes to seeking retribution and possibly setting things back to the way they were. Granted, I think most of those affected will return to the land of the living because they have sequels of their own to appear in before long, but it'd be foolish to think there won't be at least a handful of deaths permanently impacting the Marvel Cinematic Universe once Avengers: Endgame fades to black.

But before any sort of Deus ex Machina can occur, we can’t dismiss the current status quo. While speaking with Total Film, directors Joe and Anthony Russo reaffirmed how the Mad Titans’ actions were among one of the more important occurrences in MCU history, as Anthony put it.

“We do very much commit to the end of Infinity War. In the same way that when S.H.I.E.L.D. fell at the end of The Winter Soldier, we carried that forward, in the same way that when the relationship between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers was destroyed and the Avengers were divided at the end of Civil War, we carried that forward into Infinity War. We were very much carrying forward the end of Infinity War into this movie.”

To succinctly follow up on that, Joe hammered home the point that this won’t be a walk in the park for anybody:

“There will be great stakes for the characters.”

If anything, those words will only fuel speculation that certain members of the old guard – specifically Iron Man, Thor and Captain America – could bite the dust before it’s all said and done. And even if they do, the MCU still has a bright future ahead of it, as newly established cash cows such as Black Panther and Captain Marvel have proven themselves worthy of carrying the torch.

Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th.
