Infinity War’s Big Game Spot Offers First Look At Captain America’s Dual Shields

What’s better than a superpowered shield hand-crafted by the finest blacksmith in Wakanda? Two shields, of course.

Included in last night’s epic Super Bowl spot for Avengers: Infinity War (see here) was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it preview of Captain America’s kick-ass shield. And there are two of them.

Standing next to T’Challa, the would-be king of Wakanda and Black Panther-to-be, below you’ll see a bearded Steve Rogers (or should that be Nomad?) admiring his mechanized armor, which appears to extend at will. That ought to come in handy during the Battle of Wakanda, as Infinity War‘s most recent promo once again ended with that slow-mo shot of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – namely Cap, Black Widow, Hulk, War Machine, Bucky Barnes, Falcon and Okoye, leader of the Dora Milaje – rushing to defend the crown jewel of Africa.

It’s a pretty big upgrade for the star-spangled patriot, and the fact that Joe and Anthony Russo have chosen dual-wielding shields emphasizes Cap’s character change – from a straight-laced Avenger to a lone warrior disillusioned by the corruption gnawing away at the heart of America. And for that reason, Steve Rogers will be “embracing the spirit” of Nomad in a few months’ time.

On May 4th, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will culminate in spectacular fashion thanks to the release of Avengers: Infinity War. It’s merely the first chapter in a two-part finale, though, as the so-far untitled Avengers 4 is still booked in for 2019.

And after that? Who knows. With so many contracts to suss out, Marvel Studios still has some big decisions to make, but if this is to be the last hurrah for Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, then many of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are about to go out with a bang.
