DC has a long road ahead of them with their planned Extended Universe. With the competition (Marvel) having had a huge head start and quite an impressive shared cinematic universe already underway, it’s going to be tough to get fans to focus their attention and invest in a brand new one, or will it?
That’s the question on everyone’s minds, as people are asking themselves if DC/Warner Bros. will be able to draw enough eyeballs away from Marvel in order to have their EU really take off. For the most part though, fans seem pretty excited about what the studios have in store. Not only because we’re seeing iconic characters like Batman and Superman being brought to the big screen, but also because these films will all have one very different thing about them that’s going to clearly separate them from what Marvel’s doing. And that’s the fact that they’ll be a lot more gritty and grounded.
Take one look at the trailer for Suicide Squad or Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and it’s easy to see that Warner Bros. and DC are going for a darker superhero universe, one that’s more grounded in reality and not as comical. And for most people, that’s going to be a very, very refreshing change from what Marvel is doing, and has been doing for years now.
So, on that note, it was certainly encouraging to hear what actor Scoot McNairy had to say about the film when we sat down with him recently at the LA press day for his latest effort, Our Brand Is Crisis. While we wouldn’t give too much away, he did say this when asked what fans should expect from Batman V Superman.
“This is the superhero film that is more grounded in reality than any of the other ones. It’s a comic book movie, yes, but it’s very, very grounded.”
We can’t take away much from that, of course, but it’s still good to hear this being re-enforced over and over again from those involved with the film. I really do think that people are yearning for something different from the Marvel fare and based on what McNairy and everyone else has been saying over the past few months, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be just that: different.
Tell us, are you happy to hear McNairy driving home the fact that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be grounded, or do you prefer seeing more light-hearted comic book movies?
