So, if the DCEU isn’t doing origin stories, then it makes just as much sense to have a Cyborg solo movie after two Justice League team efforts, as at the beginning. Just as – in the New 52 comic book re-launch – Cyborg (also known as Victor Stone) is a founding member of the Justice League, he is also instrumental in the confrontation with Darkseid, who was, in turn, an instrumental part of Cyborg’s creation.
With Darkseid, it’s all about Mother Boxes, Boom Tubes and Parademons. These are all items of technology and creatures that essentially herald his arrival, and a Mother Box is what the parents of Victor Stone – scientists at S.T.A.R Labs – are studying when a terrible accident occurs and Victor is mortally wounded. His parents enhance his body with cybernetics, and Cyborg is created – but Darkseid is still coming. Cyborg’s technical expertise and capabilities prove invaluable in the fight to save humanity.
What is interesting about the scheduling of the Cyborg movie is that it forms part of a momentum that takes the DCEU beyond the confines of contemporary Earth. The films up to this point – while centring on super-powered, fantastical characters – have all been based in a relatable reality. Superman and Batman operate in cities; Wonder Woman and Aquaman are steeped in ancient, well-documented mythologies; The Flash can access all of time, but is just a young, fast-paced man.
Cyborg is next-level, however. He is a commentary on the technological advances we are making in our reality, which lead to us expanding the horizons of which we know, and pushing the boundaries of which we do not. He is, at once, a cautionary tale, and a window of temptation on what could be possible. The question is, if Darkseid is defeated in Justice League: Part Two, is the Cyborg solo movie that follows opening up the possibility of a continuation of the DCEU beyond 2020?
