Batman V Superman And Beyond: What To Expect From The DCEU

If there is a single, universal truth, it is surely that everything is connected. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just as our own daily lives intersect and impact upon each other, so does artistic output – and when it comes to the fledgling DC Extended Universe, artistic output is key. Comic books have long been appreciated as the very specific art form that they are, but when the art of comic books is married with the art of filmmaking, something truly magical is born. While we have been enjoying that marriage between Marvel comic books and Marvel Studios for almost a decade now, it is the DC cinematic adaptations that are currently getting fans hot under the collar.

Having been to ancient civilizations, back to World War I, into contemporary cities, under the world’s oceans, and through technological advancement, the final movie currently planned for the DCEU takes us into the farthest reaches of space, with a Green Lantern Corps. movie. The more cynical among us might choose to believe that Warner Bros. have set this one at the end so as to ensure that everyone has had a chance to erase the disastrous 2011 version that so sullied the brand. However, if you look at the DCEU as a whole, it just flows beautifully to this interstellar point.

Serving as an intergalactic police force for three billion years at the request of a race known as Guardians from the planet Oa, Lanterns are individuals of strong moral fortitude, who are given a Power Ring that enables them to harness the creative strength of their own will. With over 7000 Green Lanterns in operation, the opportunity for filmmakers to use of a range of characters is greatly increased.

The most adapted Green Lantern character is almost certainly Hal Jordan, but the other five most regularly depicted in the comic books are John Stewart, Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Simon Baz and Kyle Rayner. The reason this is interesting, and the reason it is perfectly scheduled at the end of the initial DCEU is that its characters tie the Earth-bound action to the rest of the universe. If everything is connected, we will see just how strong those connections are, as Earth-bound Lanterns operate within an inter-galactic framework. And what of the future? Perhaps further connections, and sequels, will be possible – all from the seeds planted in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which bursts onto cinema screens on March 25th, 2016.
