Batman V Superman And Beyond: What To Expect From The DCEU

If there is a single, universal truth, it is surely that everything is connected. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just as our own daily lives intersect and impact upon each other, so does artistic output – and when it comes to the fledgling DC Extended Universe, artistic output is key. Comic books have long been appreciated as the very specific art form that they are, but when the art of comic books is married with the art of filmmaking, something truly magical is born. While we have been enjoying that marriage between Marvel comic books and Marvel Studios for almost a decade now, it is the DC cinematic adaptations that are currently getting fans hot under the collar.

Release Date: November 17th, 2017

There’s Superman – the Kryptonian, made super-human by Earth’s yellow sun; Batman – orphaned billionaire playboy turned vigilante; Wonder Woman – the super-powered Amazonian Warrior; Aquaman – King of the Seven Seas; The Flash – a super-fast police scientist; and Cyborg – genius son of scientists who augment him with cybernetics to save his life. They are the Justice League, and they have never before appeared in their own live-action theatrical film.

Having been brought together by the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice – which was itself sparked by the events of Man Of SteelJustice League: Part One continues the plot arc set in motion by its predecessor. This may well turn out to be the arrival of Darkseid – as has been widely speculated – but that remains to be seen. What we can look forward to, however, is further development of the relationships between these remarkable, iconic characters, as they are forced to find ways to work together. They are each very different, and have their own, very specific situations happening simultaneously – but their mutual desire to save humanity and the planet it resides on leads to the most spectacular kind of teamwork.

With Academy Award winner Chris Terrio in the writer’s chair, and Zack Snyder directing, we can also expect full and proper attention and reverence being paid to the history of each character, within a topical context. If Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice prove anything, it is that Snyder, Terrio and their producers are basing their Justice League firmly in the real world insofar as is possible. That means important reference to global politics, environmental issues, media and feminism – making Justice League as relevant as it will be entertaining.

It is important to note its very deliberate scheduling, however. By the time Justice League: Part One arrives, the only solo character films to have been released in the DCEU will have been Man Of Steel and Wonder Woman, and even then, Wonder Woman will have first appeared in Dawn Of Justice. All the super-powered characters in this team-up feature – with the exception of Superman – have been introduced within other stories – which is, in itself, a groundbreaking approach.
