Robert Downey Jr. has had a long and successful career in Hollywood and has starred in some truly great movies over the years. Although the younger generation of movie-watchers might be familiar with his now iconic Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes roles, his filmography goes much deeper than that. Chaplin (1992)

Downey Jr. gave an Oscar-nominated performance as the titular Charlie Chaplin in this 1992 biopic. The movie chronicles Chaplin’s life from his humble beginnings as a vaudeville performer to his rise to stardom as one of the most famous actors and directors in Hollywood history. Downey’s performance as Friendly, Murrow’s producer, is one of his best — he’s charming, funny, and completely believable as a guy who’s fiercely loyal to his friend and colleague. The script, also written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, is sharp and smart as it examines the power of Murrow’s words to stand up to McCarthyism. Zodiac (2007)

This movie is based on the true story of the Zodiac Killer, a serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The movie focuses on the detectives who were assigned to the case, and Downey Jr. plays one of those detectives. Zodiac is well-written and directed, and Downey Jr. gives a great performance, with great chemistry with other actors.

Short Cuts (1993)

Iron Man (2008)
