At first glance, Brainiac seems like the kind of villain best suited for the big screen. While that would certainly do the character justice, Smallville proved that he can be handled well on television, and he could be just the kind of big threat that the Supergirl TV series needs. There have been several versions of Brainiac in the comics, one of the most popular being that he's a self-aware artificial intelligence from the planet Krypton. Seeing as Superman himself will be largely absent from Supergirl, introducing another Kryptonian character like Brainiac would be a great way to play around with Kara's origin. Add the bottled city of Kandor into the mix, and you've got yourself one compelling story about a girl who grew up on Krypton and has access to one final piece of her homeworld - she just has to get through Brainiac first. A future version of Brainiac, Brainiac 5, even strikes up a relationship with Supergirl, something that the series could allude to.

Is Brainiac The Villain In The Justice League Movie?

While our sights are currently set on Zack Snyder's upcoming film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, that hasn't stopped our curiosity from stretching to the director's next gig, a little DC Comics film called Justice League. While much fan discussion has been devoted to determining who the titular superhero team will consist of, there's been just as much debate and speculation about who the League will go up against.

While our sights are currently set on Zack Snyder’s upcoming film Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, that hasn’t stopped our curiosity from stretching to the director’s next gig, a little DC Comics film called Justice League. While much fan discussion has been devoted to determining who the titular superhero team will consist of, there’s been just as much debate and speculation about who the League will go up against.

We recently heard a rumor that big DC baddie Darkseid would be left out of the proceedings until Justice League 2, leaving a large role to fill for the first JL film. Many (including myself) have speculated that fan-favorite foe Brainiac could fill that void, and now we’ve learned that that may in fact be the case.

Latino Review’s El Mayimbe dropped the scoop on the latest edition of the Schmoes Know Meet the Movie Press podcast, saying the following:

“I’m told the set up is in Batman V Superman. The rumor is that Brainiac is going to be the bad guy in Justice League. And the set up of it is cool: remember how the Kryptonian beacon that Clark set off brought Zod to Earth? Brainiac heard it as well. That’s what I’m haring… Basically Brainiac is going to be set up somehow at the end of Batman V Superman, from what I’m hearing, and then it goes into Justice League.”

The new rumor should be taken with the requisite grain of salt, of course, as Mayimbe has been wrong before. However, he does get quite a few scoops right, and that setup does make perfect sense, so there’s a very good chance that he’s right on the money this time.

A sentient artificial intelligence hailing from the planet Krypton, Brainiac is one of the smartest supervillains in the DC universe and is primarily an adversary of Superman. In the New 52, he’s been imagined as a “Collector of Worlds,” who has traveled the galaxy and decides to add Earth to his library. He was a;sp behind the schemes of Lex Luthor and Metallo.

Justice League doesn’t have an official release date, but it’s rumored to hit theaters in 2017. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives on March 25th, 2016.
