With Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy having been released, my focus is shifted to my other most anticipated film of this year: David Fincher‘s adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Today, Sony has unleashed a brand new 4 minute trailer for the film which details a lot more of Stieg Larsson’s complex narrative than the punchier teaser trailer did.

Looking at this, Fincher and his team have tried to go a whole different route with the look and the style in comparison to the original. It looks similar to a certain extent but mostly it is different. And, the story appears to be focusing on what a lot of the original Swedish film left out.

For example, there appears to be a lot more with Lisbeth and her girlfriend, who you only see fleetingly in the Swedish film, and Robin Wright in the role as Millennium editor Erika Berger, the love interest of Daniel Craig‘s Mikael Blomkvist.

The film also looks beautiful. It is shot by Jeff Cronenweth, who of course worked on Fight Club and The Social Network with Fincher, and it appears to be creating a look very close to the likes of Se7en. Only in place of grime there’s a very distinct Scandinavian chill.

Also, one of the many concerns raised by numerous people is whether it would be done without accents or not. It is of course in English but only some speak with the accent. What they have done, and what I think is a smart move is to keep all the accents according to the actor’s nationality, only just toning them down a bit. Daniel Craig sounds British but it is a reduced accent and it is the same with Robin Wright or Stellan Skarsgard, who is in fact Swedish.

The only actor who does not conform to this is Rooney Mara, a smart move as the character she plays is meant to be alienated and different. It works rather well and shows that Fincher knows what he is doing and knows that people trying to force on accents often turns to farce.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be in cinemas on December 21st. You can watch the trailer below.
