Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) will fight alongside the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, the first official synopsis for Marvel’s upcoming Phase Three film has confirmed.
Though we already knew that many of the superheroes listed in the description would be appearing alongside Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in what is an atypically monumental blockbuster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s also just been revealed that the Vision (Paul Bettany) and General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) will be appearing in the film.
The plot synopsis also reveals what many of us had already assumed, which is that Captain America will still be leading a new Avengers lineup at the beginning of Civil War. That “international incident” the synopsis teases is certainly an interesting plot point to chew on – in the comics, an explosive villain named Nitro, after fighting an amateurish group of heroes, leveled multiple city blocks and caused the deaths of over 600 civilians, 60 of whom were children attending an elementary school at the devastation’s epicenter. Of course, neither Nitro nor those heroes, called the New Warriors, have popped up in the MCU yet, so it’s expected that Marvel will come up with a different (probably less grim) disaster to spark the Civil War.
Notably absent from the plot synopsis is Spider-Man and the actor who will play him. More is expected on that front shortly though.
Captain America: Civil War ignites on May 6, 2016.
Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, “Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The Winter Solider”). The film returns Chris Evans as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America along with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.
After his debut in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” on July 17, 2015, Paul Rudd will make his first appearance alongside the Avengers as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.”
The film also includes outstanding additional cast, including Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/ Crossbones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Martin Freeman.
“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
