Captain Marvel Theory Explains How Carol Gets Her Classic Costume

Like a $152 million pop concert, Captain Marvel is a spectacle with a few costume changes. Not only have we already seen Brie Larson’s character rock a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt to match the film’s ‘90s backdrop, but she's also been shown to wear at least two different outfits when she's in superhero mode.

Like a $152 million pop concert, Captain Marvel is a spectacle with a few costume changes. Not only have we already seen Brie Larson’s character rock a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt to match the film’s ‘90s backdrop, but she’s also been shown to wear at least two different outfits when she’s in superhero mode.

While stills from next year’s movie have featured Carol Danvers in a green and black outfit when she’s working with her Kree colleagues, we’ve also seen images of the character wearing a red-and-blue getup while on Earth. This change in attire has led one user on Reddit to speculate that the latter costume was the suggestion of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Phil Coulson.

There’s certainly some logic to this idea, too. We already know that a younger version of Coulson will have a part to play in Captain Marvel, and better yet, we also know that he’s a serious Captain America fanboy. After meeting a new superhero who also goes by the ‘Captain’ title, perhaps it’s only natural that Coulson would suggest a color scheme similar to the patriotic getup of Steve Rogers. The evidence is still pretty thin for this idea, but it seems rather plausible.

In any case, the upcoming flick will see Carol entering into a very different world from the one that Avengers: Infinity War left us with. For the character’s solo debut, we’ll be journeying back to a time before the streets and skies were crowded with famed superheroes, when even Captain America was little more than a memory from the years of World War II.

Of course, the subsequent Avengers 4 should bring her up to speed with the chaotic events of the present day MCU, before she, Steve, and the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes help bring Marvel’s Phase 3 to a close. But before all that, Carol will have the spotlight to herself when Captain Marvel comes out on March 8th, 2019.
