We all know how dark and brooding Miguel O’Hara was in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He’s someone that takes things seriously for the sake of the multiverse. So you could imagine the shock and laughter when it was recently discovered that this moody Spider-person has something in common with Toad from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The connection between the two characters were found when the below tweet looked into the international voice actors for Across the Spider-Verse. More specifically, the Japanese voice actors to see if any cast members starred in any notable characters or anime series.
Then came the Japanese voice actor for Miguel O’Hara. It turns out he’s played by Tomokazu Seki, known for his roles in the Assassination Classroom, Demon Slayer, One Piece, and most recently, Captain Toad in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. That’s right, the cute and adorable Toad, the only one who was brave enough to accompany Princess Peach and Mario to the Jungle Kingdom, is voiced by the same guy who wants to protect the multiverse from anomalies.
You have to admit, this is pretty funny. These are two contrasting characters with very different personalities, played by the same guy. What’s funny is the fact that Seki was also the Japanese voice actor for Agustin Madrigal in Encanto, someone who married himself to the family, despite not having a gift and defended Mirabel during the film’s climax. So while it is funny to see Spider-Man 2099 have the same voice actor as someone simple as Toad or Agustin, it just goes to show that Seki is pretty talented and can play a wide range of characters.
If you want a little extra something to chuckle at, you wouldn’t believe who voiced Peter B. Parker in the Japanese dub.
That’s right, it’s Mr. Light Yagami from Death Note himself, Mamoru Miyano, who probably did a better voice-acting job for the iconic plumber compared to Chris Pratt.
Unfortunately, the Japanese dub isn’t available in America. But who knows, once it arrives on streaming platforms, an Japanese language option could be included. For now, you can watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in English right now in theaters.
