It has been news for a while now that Australian director Baz Luhrmann, best known for his wildly post modern takes on old Hollywood traditions, would be re-adapting F Scott Fiztgerald’s sublime novel, The Great Gatsby, which is widely regarded as one of the finest ever written.

With Leonardo DiCaprio signed on to play the enigmatic Jay Gatsby, both actor and director are currently trying to find a Daisy Buchanan to play opposite him. Scarlett Johansson was the initial contender but now, after auditioning last week, British Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan is reportedly the favourite to take the role and is currently in negotiations.

There is no official announcement as of yet but it is speculated that she is top draw for both DiCaprio and Luhrmann. I think she is a terrific choice for the role, seeing what she has done so far there should be no reason why she shouldn’t take the role. Meanwhile casting the other parts continues and is shaping up for filming to begin by next summer.
