Charlie Day, co-star of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, is in talks to join Pacific Rim. According to Variety, Day may join the Guillermo Del Toro-directed sci fi about an alien invasion and the human/robot teams that do battle.

Day will potentially play a professor in Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim. His ample comic appeal, showcased on It‘s Always Sunny, has already earned him some co-starring film roles and a starring role in upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses with Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis.

Pacific Rim sounds like an interesting sci-fi flick, apparently influenced by the anime sub-genre mecha. The story involves an alien invasion that threatens the whole world that has humans banding together and building giant robots that they can pilot and use against the aliens.

Pacific Rim was penned by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) and Legendary Pictures is apparently looking at Pacific Rim as a tentpole for newer talent. The film starts shooting this fall.
