Zombie films are like buses. When you desperately need to catch one, there's nary one in sight. And when one does arrive it's followed by another three all filled with people moaning, groaning and generally causing a disturbance. Zombie films are like buses. When you desperately need to catch one, there’s nary one in sight. And when one does arrive it’s followed by another filled with people moaning, groaning and generally causing a disturbance. In addition to today’s arrival of the trailer for Brad Pitt’s zombie apocalypse flick, World War Z, we’ve also got the first full length trailer for Jonathan Levine‘s Warm Bodies.

A rom-zom based on the novel by Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies tells the story of a zombie called R, played by Nicholas Hoult who falls in love with a girl whose boyfriend’s brains he’d eaten. By way of a previously untapped zombie twist, through ingesting the boy’s brains R is able to relive the lad’s memories and become enamoured with his girlfriend, played by Teresa Palmer.

This first trailer is a good indication of the direction Levine appears to have taken the film, which injects humour, heart and scares. The necessary voice over plays an important role as the zombie method of communication is restricted to grunts and pointing which manifests as a useful comedic gimmick. Levine has a knack for combining sombre subject matter with a playful, light tone as mastered in the cancer buddy flick 50/50, so the chances look good for his zombie romance.

Check out the trailer below before Warm Bodies lands in theatres on February 1st, 2013.
