Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok

Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel Contract Is Up, But He Wants To Stick Around After Avengers 4

It's been a long, crazy ride for the cast and crew of Avengers: Infinity War and (the as yet untitled) Avengers 4. Beginning in 2017, Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers brought together pretty much every single actor to ever have donned a brightly colored costume in the MCU for what's surely going to go down in history as the most ambitious celluloid superhero tale of all-time.

It’s been a long, crazy ride for the cast and crew of Avengers: Infinity War and (the as yet untitled) Avengers 4. Beginning in 2017, Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers brought together pretty much every single actor to ever have donned a brightly colored costume in the MCU for what’s surely going to go down in history as the most ambitious celluloid superhero tale of all-time.

Now, as we begin 2018, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have all announced that they’ve finished shooting their scenes for the project, and the latest to join that list is Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth. But has the Aussie actor also shot his last scenes ever as the God of Thunder? If it’s up to him, then the answer to that question would be no, as Hemsworth is hoping to return for whatever Marvel has planned for Phase 4.

Speaking to IGN to promote his new film 12 Strong, he was asked how things were going on Avengers 4, to which he said:

“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished and that’s my contract — my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘wow, that’s it.'”

Further in the interview, he also touched on how Ragnarok renewed his interest in playing the character, which is something we’ve heard him speak about before.

“Two or three films ago I was like, ‘okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it but I was like… I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika [Waititi, director of Ragnarok], and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times — even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise,” Hemsworth said. “So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”

Finally, IGN posed to him the question that’s on everyone’s mind: will we see Thor in the MCU past Avengers 4? While Hemsworth couldn’t confirm that one way or another, he did say he’d love to play the God of Thunder again.

“If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I’d love to. I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.”

So, will Chris Hemsworth get his wish and continue to bring to life the beloved hero in Phase 4? Well, that’s obviously impossible to know right now given that Marvel’s been pretty tight-lipped about their future plans. That being said, taking into account the tremendous success of Ragnarok, you have to imagine that the studio might be looking to keep him around.

Again though, who knows? A couple of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will definitely be exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the credits roll on Avengers 4, and we can only hope that the mighty Thor won’t be one of them.
