The controversial firing of James Gunn has left Marvel Studios in a bit of a pickle when it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Currently without a director, the follow-up to 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been placed on hold for the time being, and in the months since Gunn was dropped, we haven’t really received much in the way of concrete updates in regards to what’s happening with it.
But while the next standalone outing for Star-Lord and co. is presumably still a long wait away, it’s definitely coming. In fact, Sean Gunn, brother of James, said as much just this week and now here to reassure us even more is Chris Pratt, who spoke with Variety recently and had the following to say when asked about the status of the threequel:
“I promise there’ll be a third movie, I don’t know exactly what that’s going to look like, but I know everyone on board is just eager to give the fans what they want and wrap up a trilogy in a meaningful way.”
Seeing how Marvel Studios still hasn’t appointed James Gunn’s replacement, we can’t imagine production will be firing up before mid-to-late 2020 – and that’s at the earliest. Not that Kevin Feige and co. seem to be in a hurry, mind you, as the curtain’s about to fall on Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and they’ve already got their hands full with Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel.
In fact, at this rate, Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel will almost certainly be arriving in theaters before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but in the meantime, there’s still much to look forward to from Marvel – as mentioned above – and it’s good to hear that the threequel continues to brew in development. Even if it’s going to be a rather long wait before we see it.
