The great thing about expos and conferences is that they always tend to drop little morsels for us online entertainment journalists to blow up into huge news stories.

That being said, here we go again: A licensing expo is set to get underway in Las Vegas next week, and Collider has some new promo images from various upcoming Sony Pictures projects, including a synopsis and release date for Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.

Cloudy 2 is the sequel to the surprise animated hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is based on the popular children’s book. The original followed an inventor named Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) who creates a machine that harnesses the weather and turns it into food.

The sequel will apparently take place directly in the aftermath of the food/weather cataclysm of the first film:

In the wake of the disastrous food storm at the end of the first movie, Flint Lockwood and friends are forced to leave their town of Swallow Falls.  But when it is discovered that sentient food beasts have overrun the island, they are asked to return to save the world…again.

Sentient food beasts? If only Guillermo del Toro could get his hands on that production design. Sounds like a good concept for fans of the original.

No word on whether Hader or co-voice star Anna Faris will reprise their roles, but it’s hard to imagine they won’t. Original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will not return for the sequel (they’re working on a CGI Lego movie for Warner Bros.), so the film will instead be helmed by Cody Cameron – who among other things voiced Pinocchio and the Three Little Pigs for the Shrek franchise – and Kris Pearn, who was head of story in the animation department on the first Cloudy.

Sony has scheduled the film for release on February 7, 2014.
