The Conjuring is the gift that just keeps on giving. At least, for the folks over at New Line, it is. The horror series has seen two very successful instalments already and also spawned spinoff Annabelle, which is getting a sequel this summer. But if you thought the haunted shenanigans would stop there, think again, as we now have The Nun, yet another spinoff to emerge from James Wan’s frightening film.
Scripted by Gary Dauberman and Wan (who will also produce), Deadline is reporting tonight that Corin Hardy has come on board to direct the horror movie, which will, you guessed it, focus on the demonic nun from The Conjuring 2. Though not a household name just yet, Hardy has been a director to watch out for for some time now and at one point, was set to remake The Crow, until that all fell apart. Landing a high-profile horror gig like this is definitely a good move for him and we’re excited to see what he does with the spinoff.
That being said, Annabelle was far from as effective or terrifying as either Conjuring film was, so we are a bit hesitant at the news of another spinoff being pushed into production. We’ve no doubt that it’ll be a lucrative venture for New Line, but whether it’ll turn out to be anything more than a cash grab is up for debate – especially since we know very little about it right now.
Still, Hardy is an exciting talent and with Wan involved in both scripting and producing capacities, perhaps The Nun will turn out to be a worthwhile spinoff. Time will tell.
