According to Deadline, Inglourious Basterds star Daniel Bruhl has signed on to play the villain in Captain America: Civil War, joining returning franchise stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. for the third Cap instalment. Back in the saddle are The Winter Soldier helmers, Joe and Anthony Russo, who will direct the ever-expanding cast.

Set to kick off Marvel’s phase three slate, the story for Civil War is still officially under wraps. From what we understand, it’ll be based around the infamous Civil War plot lines that have become favourites amongst fans of the original comics. This may hint somewhat towards Bruhl’s role as the film’s chief antagonist. While Marvel have remained tight-lipped on the details, studio head Kevin Feige offered a brief insight into their decision to cast Bruhl:

“With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes.”

Recently seen giving a fantastic performance opposite Chris Hemsworth in Rush, Bruhl is currently filming Colonia Dignidad. It’s expected he will begin work on Civil War in the new year. You can read more from Marvel’s official press release below, before letting us know who you think he’ll be playing in the threequel.

Captain America: Civil War hits cinemas on May 6th, 2016.

Daniel Bruhl (“Rush,” “Inglourious Basterds”) has joined the cast of Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” set to rock the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 6, 2016.

The celebrated actor earned Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in director Ron Howard’s “Rush.” In addition to Howard, Bruhl has also worked with other esteemed directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Greengrass, Anton Corbijn, and Michael Winterbottom.

Bruhl joins Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) in “Captain America: Civil War,” with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after this year’s hit Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

“With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes,” said Producer Kevin Feige.

Bruhl is represented by Tavistock Wood Management, Players Agentur Management, and WME.
