Earlier today, we brought you the news that Marvel is reportedly developing a Moon Knight movie. Fans have been waiting to see the hero – real name: Marc Spector – in the MCU for the longest time, so this intel from our source is seriously exciting. What’s more, we’ve heard a couple of names that the studio apparently has on their wishlist to play the part.
One is former Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield and another, apparently, is Joseph Gordon-Levitt of The Dark Knight Rises fame. One of the reasons fans want to see Moon Knight brought to the screen is because he’s such a complex character, with his disassociative identity disorder and personal demons putting a strain on his sanity. Both Garfield and Gordon-Levitt are terrific performers and either of them could definitely handle an antihero role like this.
We’ve also been told that Marvel is keen to cast a Jewish actor to portray Moon Knight, as per his heritage in the comics. This would be a first for the MCU, too, as while there’ve been Jewish leads in the franchise before, their characters have either not shared their background or it hasn’t been explored. This casting fits with Marvel’s desire to diversify the MCU from top to bottom going forward as well.
If Gordon-Levitt did land the part, it would be his first superhero movie role since his turn as John “Robin” Blake in Christopher Nolan’s threequel. However, he was attached to another comic book production a few years back. The actor was set to produce and possibly star in an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, but he ultimately left the project due to creative differences with the studio.
Of course, we imagine that JGL and/or Kevin Feige may publicly deny this but keep in mind, James Wan once denied he was directing Aquaman before the official announcement was made, while Feige himself shot down all those Planet Hulk rumors many years ago only for the storyline to be partially used as the basis for Thor: Ragnarok. In other words, filmmakers lie all the time in order to keep surprises under wraps. Not to mention this is the same source who told us Taskmaster will be the villain in Black Widow back in March, long before it was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con.
In any case, it could be a while before we learn more about Marvel’s Moon Knight plans, but in the meantime, tell us, who would you like to see play the role?
