If you’re going to unseat Avengers: Infinity War at the global box office, you have to aim for the stars. Or Manchester United, in this particular case.

Yes, it can only be the latest promo for Deadpool 2, Fox and David Leitch’s superhero sequel that is now only a few days out. Such a tight deadline means the studio’s marketing machine has been firing on all cylinders for weeks – albeit with the Merc’s own signature touch of meta humor.

The result? A zany, irreverent promotional push that practically screams ‘Deadpool’, and a football-themed TV spot has arrived today in order to drive home the point that Wade Wilson will stop at nothing until Infinity War has been cut down to size. At the domestic box office, at least.

Such an ambitious plan places the Merc With a Mouth in Old Trafford, home to Manchester United, where he begins to stage his Deadpool-themed takeover, as we see prominent players like Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Luke Shaw and the outgoing Michael Carrick (reluctantly) agree to sport Wade’s movie swag.

It’s by no means the first time Fox and Co. have dabbled in the world of football, after the in-character Ryan Reynolds approached David Beckham to apologize for his crude and, frankly, hilarious joke from the first movie.

Suffice it to say, the Deadpool 2 marketing campaign has taken on a life of its own over the past few months, and at least based on knee-jerk reactions, the David Leitch-directed sequel lives up to expectations. And then some.

Hell, Hugh Jackman even went on record to say that Deadpool 2 is a work of genius, and we’ll find out whether the Merc’s second coming is up to snuff this Friday, May 18th.
