Right now, we have the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, but are you ready for…the Extreme Universe?! Created by Deadpool‘s Rob Liefeld, it’s been revealed today that Graham King, Akiva Goldsman and China’s Fundamental Films have nabbed the rights to the world created by the comic book writer and artist.
The plan apparently is for a writers room to be set up the same way Paramount recently put together one for the Transformers franchise. From there, they’ll brainstorm ideas and hopefully come up with a series of movies featuring the heroes and villains created by Liefeld over the years.
Those include the likes of Bloodstrike, Re-Gex and Kaboom – Youngblood is unfortunately not part of the deal due to the fact that the rights are currently tied up elsewhere. Still, the Extreme Universe has some real potential, but whether or not it can ever truly compete with the likes of Marvel and DC is hard to say.
Regardless, here’s what Liefeld had to share about the announcement:
“Over the past nearly 25 years, since launching Image Comics, I’ve been lucky enough to see the power of these stories and characters as they’ve resonated with several generations of comic book fans. To now be able to work with Akiva Goldsman and Graham King, who are powerhouses in their own right, to bring these compelling characters and conflicts to life on the big screen is nothing short of a dream come true!”
The superhero movie genre is extremely crowded, so whether there’s room for these “Extreme” characters remains to be seen. Something a little different to Marvel and DC would be no bad thing, of course, but an argument could be made that Deadpool is Liefeld’s greatest creation, and none of the other characters listed above have found the same level of success.
Who knows, though, that could be about to change….
