New Detective Pikachu Teaser May Hint At The Movie’s Secret Villain

Last month, reports emerged that the upcoming Detective Pikachu will reveal the legendary Mewtwo to be the secret villain of the story. Last month, reports emerged that the upcoming Detective Pikachu will reveal the legendary Mewtwo to be the secret villain of the story. And while we’ve yet to catch any glimpse of the figure in promotion for the first live-action Pokémon movie, a newly released teaser just might contain a hint of the psychic character’s influence on the film’s events.

Though the brief teaser, viewable above, consists of mostly familiar footage, one new shot of Charizard has quickly caught the attention of the internet. As you can see in the image below, the fire and flying Pokémon has a slightly deranged look on its face, with eyes that seem to be an unusual shade of purple. And while we can’t rule out the possibility that Charizard’s eyes are simply reflecting what’s in front of it, some fans are quite understandably taking this image as a sign that the beast is under the control of Mewtwo, whose trademark color just so happens to be purple.

The theory honestly seems pretty plausible, but unless the trailer dropping tomorrow can shed any light on the situation, we could still be a couple of months away from getting some confirmation.

Incidentally, it was reported earlier this year that not only will Mewtwo be showing up in Detective Pikachu, but he may even have a spinoff in development. Whether or not the project ever sees the light of day may depend on how this first film fares at the box office, though according to THR, 22 Jump Street scribe Oren Uziel has already been hired to work on a direct sequel. We’ll find out if Legendary Pictures was right to count their chickens once Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10th, 2019, but as it stands, early buzz for the movie is surprisingly strong.
