Director Olivia Wilde teases her mysterious Marvel movie

Olivia Wilde has teased the mysterious Marvel Comics adaptation she's been developing with Sony for over a year.

In August of 2020, Olivia Wilde was announced to be directing a mysterious Marvel Comics adaptation for Sony, diving straight into the blockbuster business despite having just one feature film under her belt from the other side of the camera.

Of course, it helps that Booksmart won almost unanimous critical acclaim, winding up with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score despite failing to perform in line with expectations at the box office. Wilde’s next effort Don’t Worry Darling is scheduled for release this coming September, so there’s a strong chance she’ll be diving into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after that.

Not a shred of official information has been divulged other than the fact Wilde will reunite with Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling writer Katie Silberman on the project, but she teased what’s in store during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I’m just honored to be amongst this wave of women who are showing up and saying ‘we are not only going to step in and try and tell this story like men do, we’re actually going to reframe the stories themselves. And the industry is, as far as I can tell, really supportive of that. There is a sea change and it’s because of these decades of trailblazers who demanded this over and over and over again and it’s finally broken through and I’m very fortunate to be there with it.”

It hasn’t come close to being confirmed, but a lot of speculation is operating under the assumption that Wilde will be revealed as the helmer of a Spider-Woman adaptation. Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home created a lot of goodwill towards Sony’s latest stab at a superhero universe, something Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and whatever Wilde is cooking up will be hoping to capitalize on.
