Disney CEO congratulates Universal on the success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’

Disney's Bob Iger has some words of praise for the latest Illumination film.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has managed to exceed expectations after its release. Sure, the critic reception isn’t that great. But both the audience reception and box office performance was something to take note of. So much so that even Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger had some kind words to say about the latest video game adaptation.

During the Q2 earnings call, Iger commented on the latest Illumination film and chimed in on the film’s success. According to ComicBook.com, the comments were made during the start of company’s earnings call and the Disney CEO showed optimism about both the film’s success and its influence on the movie industry.

“Allow me to digress for a moment to congratulate Universal for the tremendous success of Super Mario Brothers. It certainly proves people love to be entertained in theatres around the world and it gives us reason to be optimistic about the movie business.”

As of writing, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned over $1.16 billion at the box office worldwide and is now the 5th highest-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing Illumination’s Minions, and is just below Disney’s Incredibles 2. Audiences praised the film upon its release, to the point where it received a staggering average audience score rating of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s not just at the box office where this film saw success. The film’s original song, “Peaches” made it to the Billboard charts and it was announced by Universal Pictures that it’s eligible for an Oscar.

At the moment, Nintendo has no plans to release new installments of the franchise. However, the film’s stars Jack Black and Seth Rogen have revealed their interest in reprising their roles in future Mario movies.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is still showing in theaters. No news just yet on when the film will hit streaming platforms.
