In a recent appearance at the Denver Pop Culture Con, Benedict Wong confirmed that a Doctor Strange sequel is in the midst of pre-production as we speak:

“I know they’ve now got a writer on board who I met at the Endgame premiere. So I think that may be happening sometime next year.”

Of course, this isn’t too shocking, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed last year that a new Strange movie was in the works:

“Sometimes, it’s where do those characters pop up. Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange [movie], which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of Infinity War. So it is just a good problem to have when you have too many beloved characters that people want to see more of, whilst keeping to our core belief that we need to keep exploring nuance and keep doing different types of things.”

Rumors are swirling that the sequel could introduce classic Marvel comics characters Brother Voodoo and Clea, the niece of Dormammu. Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One is also expected to return after her extended surprise cameo in Avengers: Endgame. And let’s not forget that Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo is also still out there, having last been seen slaying Benjamin Bratt while claiming that Earth has “too many sorcerers.” Add that to the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch’s title character had a massive involvement in the last two Avengers movies, and it sounds like his next appearance in the MCU could take any number of directions.

Scott Derrickson, director of the first film is expected to return for the sequel, and if production really does begin next year, we can expect Doctor Strange 2 to hit theaters sometime in 2021.
