Just because Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was released in cinemas nearly a year ago doesn’t mean that we’ll stop talking about it anytime soon. As you know, movies of this nature are ripe for film trivia and we often learn new things about them even decades later.
On that very note, official behind the scenes shots and a dazzling visual effects reel were recently revealed, thus today’s topic for discussion makes for a most welcome addition to the trifecta. Granted, it’s a different piece of the production’s puzzle, but pretty cool nonetheless.
Let me preface this by first saying that it’s a matter of public record that I’m someone who liked this movie – specifically the Ultimate Edition on Blu-ray – but I fully admit that Doomsday could have looked better. With so much attention being paid to detail in comic book movies these days, it was baffling as to why one of Superman’s deadliest and most distinctive looking villains ended up being a nude, mostly smooth brute worthy of being compared by many to the cave troll from Lord of the Rings.
But, according to this concept art by Constantine Serkis, we very nearly received something more accurate to the source material. I mean, not 100% accurate, but the bone protrusions were there, especially in the 3D rendering – albeit the monstrosity still had a deep hatred for wearing pants.
What’s kind of funny is that a more true to the comics version of Doomsday was seen in Smallville season 8 and, not only was that achieved with prosthetics, but the feat was doubly amazing when you factor in the knowledge that The CW rolled the series’ budget back to what it was allotted for its first season. That said, I shall forever remain perplexed as to why a movie with hundreds of millions of dollars sunk into its budget such as Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice couldn’t match such a thing.
