Amid the furore of Henry Cavill’s alleged departure from Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe, a curious rumor emerged linking Michael B. Jordan, star of Black Panther and Josh Trank’s ill-fated Fantastic Four reboot, with the seemingly vacant role of Superman.
First reported by Deadline, the story goes that Warner has earmarked Jordan to be the next Man of Steel further down the road, as it’ll be “several years” before the studio is ready to fast-track a standalone Superman movie.
Only The Flash, The Batman and Birds of Prey are expected to enter production next year, while the Powers That Be are reportedly keen to prioritize the Supergirl origin movie that’s now percolating in development. All of this leaves Kal-El out in the cold, and we wouldn’t be too surprised if this contributed to Henry Cavill’s rumored decision to choose The Witcher over the DCEU.
Whatever the case, the illustrious BossLogic has produced a new piece of fan art depicting Michael B. Jordan as our next Superman – specifically, Val-Zod.
If you’re in need of a quick comic book lesson, you should know that Val-Zod hails from Earth-Two, and is considered to be one of the last surviving Kryptionians – much like the Man of Steel before him. In this particular timeline, Kal-El’s parents welcomed Val-Zod into their home, which technically makes the two characters brothers. He first made his debut during the #19 issue of Earth 2 back in March 2014, so it’s fair to say that Val-Zod is still a relatively new figure in the Superman lore.
Will he be the one to offer an opening for Michael B. Jordan’s Superman? It’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility, though with so many conflicting reports littering the interwebs, we’ll have to adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach – particularly now that Henry Cavill is dropping cryptic clues on Instagram.
