Since the demonic little Annabelle was introduced as one of the breakout stars of 2013’s The Conjuring, her standalone movies have proven so popular that Warner Bros. is releasing the untitled Annabelle 3 over a year before the spinoff’s mother series has been given its third installment.
What’s more, things seem to be moving forward pretty much on schedule, with The Conjuring Universe Twitter account recently sharing a photo of an “A3” production slate with the words “THAT’S A WRAP” scrolled across the front. The tweet clarifies in the accompany text that “Filming is officially done on #Annabelle3. See you in theaters next summer.”
After The Nun served as a box office high for the franchise, it’s clear that The Conjuring Universe is in a very strong place commercially right now, if not exactly in the best standing with the critics, and there’s no reason to think that Annabelle 3 won’t continue this success.
The film sees the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, respectively, but the lead this time will be played by 12-year-old Mckenna Grace, who you can also catch next year as the young Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. Grace takes over from Sterling Jerins as Judy Warren, who’ll be hoping to live through the night when Annabelle awakens the dormant evil lurking in her parents’ artifacts room.
The movie has been pitched as the horror version of Night at the Museum, and you can find out if that idea’s as loopy as it sounds when Annabelle 3 hits theaters on July 3rd, 2019. After that, the spotlight goes back on Patrick and Vera when The Conjuring 3 comes out on September 11th, 2020.
