This morning, 20th Century Fox released what will reportedly be the final trailer for Simon Kinberg’s film, and appropriately enough, the ominous preview keeps the spotlight on Sophie Turner in the title role. By now, many of the trailer’s story beats will be familiar to anyone who’s been keeping track of the movie’s marketing.

We start off with the usual team blasting off into space, only for things to go very wrong, unlocking the dark potential hidden in Jean Grey. Enter Jessica Chastain as an alien shapeshifter, who encourages Phoenix to bring out her inner villain, which proves too much for even Michael Fassbender’s Magneto to handle.

While fans will no doubt be hoping that Dark Phoenix can end the franchise’s current era with a bang, it must be said that the movie isn’t heading for cinemas with the best buzz behind it. Just a few days ago, for instance, Box Office Pro had the film tracking for a pretty lackluster domestic debut in the $40-$55 million range, citing the pic’s lack of social media traction and the underwhelming response to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse as the reason for that. Meanwhile, test screening reactions have proved a little worrying, suggesting that the feature’s troubled production might well show in the final product.

Regardless, you can judge for yourself if X-Men: Dark Phoenix sends off the series on a worthy note when film hits theaters on June 7th, 2019. After that, The New Mutants is officially scheduled for release on August 2nd, though whether or not it actually makes that date is another matter entirely.
