First How To Train Your Dragon 3 Poster Welcomes You To A Hidden World

Given how successful the franchise has been up to this point, it's a bit surprising that it's taken so damn long for How To Train Your Dragon 3 to get off the ground. Granted, animated films often do have long productions, but still, the last movie flew into theatres in 2014 and the threequel isn't set to arrive until 2019. That's a five year gap, which is a long time for any series - animated or not.

Given how successful the series has been up to this point, it’s pretty surprising that it’s taken so damn long for How To Train Your Dragon 3 to materialize and spread its wings. Granted, animated films often do have long productions, but still, the last movie flew into theaters back in 2014 and the threequel isn’t set to arrive until 2019. Still, interest in the How to Train Your Dragon property remains high and fans are eager for any and all tidbits they can get their hands on as the long wait continues. Thankfully, it looks like the studio is about to lift the lid on what they have planned for us, as earlier today they dropped the very first poster for the threequel, inviting us into a hidden world.

More specifically, it places the focus on protagonist Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) standing between his dragon companion Toothless and a female Night Fury. You can check it out in the gallery below.

Though hardly the most revealing piece of art, it’s nice to see that DreamWorks is starting to spin up the marketing campaign and from what we understand, this poster reveal will be followed up by a trailer next week. Until then, however, here’s the official plot synopsis if you’re looking for more.

What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic trilogy spanning their lives.  In this next chapter, Hiccup and Toothless will finally discover their true destinies: the village chief as ruler of Berk alongside Astrid, and the dragon as leader of his own kind.  As both ascend, the darkest threat they’ve yet faced—as well as the appearance of a female Night Fury—will test the bonds of their relationship like never before.

For How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, series director Dean DeBlois returns alongside the all-star cast.  The film is produced by Brad Lewis (RatatouilleANTZ) and How to Train Your Dragon series producer Bonnie Arnold (Toy StoryTarzan).

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is set to fly into theaters on March 1st, 2019, after being delayed numerous times, and will supposedly close out the franchise. Fans needn’t worry, however, as director Dean DeBlois has already teased that there could be some spinoffs to come in the future.
