When word first got out that Ghostbusters 3 would see the torch pass to a group of kids in the teen and preteen age range, many were quick to draw comparisons to Stranger Things and It, making it almost too perfect that Finn Wolfhard, a star of both those projects, is being eyed for a role in Jason Reitman’s film.
Variety reports that Wolfhard and actress Carrie Coon are both in talks to star in the upcoming sequel. Interestingly, it’s said that Reitman was weary about bringing in anyone from the Stranger Things cast, given the obvious similarities between the two projects, but that he and the executives were “blown away” by Wolfhard’s audition. The actor is apparently in the running to play the son of a single mother, potentially played by Coon, though the report adds that it’s currently unclear how this family will connect to the new Ghostbusters team.
Though Coon might be best known for her starring role in HBO drama The Leftovers, the actress has continued to find prominent gigs in recent years, from Gone Girl to The Post to Widows. She even has some major franchise experience under her belt playing the villainous Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War.
Going by all we’ve heard about Reitman’s film, the character that Wolfhard is gunning for is likely to be one of four young stars consisting of two brother-sister combos. As for returning cast members, nothing is confirmed yet, but Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd both seem game to come back, and if Reitman is serious about Ghostbusters 3 being a “love letter” to the franchise, then it’s easy to imagine him taking the pair up on their offers. In any case, we’ll see if the new line-up can do the series justice when the film hits theaters on July 10th, 2020.
