I have all the respect in the world for Academy Award nominee Glenn Close. She’s one of the finest actresses of her generation, even though Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren ended up taking all the glory. My admiration for Close has never been stronger, as she’s about to prove just how versatile she truly is. Today, the actress has been cast as a member of the Nova Corps in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Surprised? Me too. Then again, we were caught off guard by Robert Redford being cast in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well. The Nova Corps are Marvel’s answer to DC’s Green Lantern Corps — an intergalactic police force that deals with potential threats from outer space, and Close is set to play their leader. It’s still unclear whether she’ll be playing an original character or someone we already know from the comic books, nevertheless she’ll undoubtedly turn in a magnificent performance.
James Gunn is assembling quite an ensemble for Guardians of the Galaxy. The film’s cast includes Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Michael Rooker as Yondu, while Lee Pace’s villainous role remains unspecified. John C. Reilly is rumored to take on a role — I’m guessing he’ll voice Groot due to his tremendously solid voice work in Wreck-It Ralph as the title character.
There are quite a few roles that still need to be cast (such as the insanely popular Rocket Racoon) before shooting starts, but they’ve been nailing it thus far with the casting decisions (though I would much rather see Jason Momoa star as Drax the Destroyer instead of Bautista) for Gunn’s promising debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1, 2014. What do you think of Glenn Close playing the head of the Nova Corps? Let us know in the comments below.
