‘Guardians 3’ proves why James Gunn is the right fit for ‘Superman: Legacy’ with just one line of dialogue

Gunn's got his head in the game, that's for sure.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 out in the world, James Gunn is officially six for six on major comic book screen adaptations with the Guardians trilogy and holiday special, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, and anyone familiar with each of these projects knows that Gunn can walk the walk in terms of characterization, tone, narrative, and theme, which makes us all the more excited about the incoming DC Universe.

As the new co-head of DC Studios, Gunn is set to be the prime creative voice for the DCU, starting with the animated miniseries Creature Commandos before moving on to the first main event in Superman: Legacy, which Gunn has written and will direct.

And as if Gunn’s track record and visible love for comic book characters wasn’t enough for fans to loan him their faith, Vol. 3 just may have shown us how ready Gunn is to deliver the Superman movie we’ve all dreamed of.

A Twitter user, fresh off a Vol. 3, pointed out how Rocket’s mic-drop-worthy dig at the High Evolutionary, namely about hating the way the universe was, boasted a starkly similar energy to the moment in Grant Morrison’s beloved All-Star Superman comic series where Superman tells a beaten-down Lex Luthor that he could have saved the world years ago if it actually mattered to him.

Whether this was coincidental or not, it means that Gunn’s head is certainly in the right place to handle a character like Superman, and while it’s going to take a lot more to convince the Church of Snyder that DC is in safe hands, it’s starting to look like any comic book movie fan who chooses to skip the Gunnverse will miss out like never before.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters. Superman: Legacy is due on July 11, 2025.
