When Marvel revealed their full line-up for Phase 4 at Comic-Con in July, there was some surprise from fans that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn’t on it. Though the cosmic prequel seemed to be back on track once director James Gunn was rehired after his temporary removal this March, the filmmaker’s still tied up with DC’s The Suicide Squad – though Gunn confirmed on Twitter following the Phase 4 reveal that Vol. 3 was on its way.
But, if it’s not coming in either 2020 or 2021, when can we expect to see the movie? Well, insider Charles Murphy claims that Marvel has scheduled GotG Vol. 3 to be one of the first films to kick off Phase 5 in 2022. Murphy, who’s provided some reliable intel in the past, shared on social media that he’s heard the Guardians will return on May 6th, making it the second MCU entry that year behind Black Panther 2 in February (allegedly).
Of course, we shouldn’t take this as fact right now, but the release date does fit with everything else we know about the movie. First of all, Vol. 3 is likely to fall on a Friday in May, as that’s the month both previous films landed in theaters. What’s more, 2022 would make sense, as Gunn is known to be returning to Marvel once he’s completed TSS, which films next year and comes out in 2021.
Let’s hope we won’t have to wait until later than that, though, as we’ll no doubt be desperate to see the final chapter of the Guardians by that time. The conclusion of the franchise was originally scheduled for May 2020, but obviously that became impossible due to last year’s behind-the-scenes trouble. It also doesn’t help our frayed patience that we’ve heard so many exciting rumors about new characters like Beta Ray Bill, Nova and Adam Warlock appearing, and Mark Hamill potentially playing the villain.
Tell us, though, do you think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will drop in May 2022? And if so, are you able to wait that long? Join the conversation in the comments section below.
