Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduced a highly obnoxious and obsessed antagonist. High Evolutionary, driven by his and unrealistic idea of a perfect world. Chukwudi Iwuji has received some rave reviews for his performance as the main antagonist of the movie.
Now that he has established his power in the MCU, Iwuji isn’t hesitant in taking on the Avengers. In a recent interview, Iwuji was asked if he or the High Evolutionary would be interested in taking on the other characters from the continuity. To this, Iwuji had a fascinating response.
Iwuji said that High Evolutionary’s interest in distinct species or their variants would definitely have him pursue some characters from the MCU. Since High Evolutionary is always looking for higher forms of life, Iwuji believes that he will always be interested in studying the likes of humanoids and super soldiers. He even revealed how a line that didn’t make it to the final cut further cements his obsession with distinguished life forms.
Talking to ComicBook‘s Phase Zero Podcast, Iwuji revealed how at one point High Evolutionary shows interest in Groot because of his humanoid-tree-like build. However, the dialogue didn’t make it to the cut.
“Yeah, that would be really juicy. There was a line that didn’t make it into the movie’s final cut. I think I’m okay to say it because you’ve seen the movie, but that scene where I knock Groot and Peter Quill down and I’m walking away and then they start doing their great thing with the guns. There’s a line that didn’t make it where I go, ‘Kill the human. Bring me the tree.’ Do you know what I mean?”
This particular line, Iwuji believes, establishes High Evolutionary’s infinite obsession with experimentation and the study of life forms in the pursuit of building ‘better’ ones. That’s why Iwuji says that the High Evolutionary might not right away kill such beings from the MCU, but rather, capture, and learn from them. After all, the idea is to do better and better.
“So, I’m always interested in the other. I’m always interested in something I can learn from. So, the idea of a super soldier and the serums and strength and these sort of variants to humanity would’ve completely fascinated me. I’d have definitely gone after them, but to study, not to destroy. Well, destroy. Maybe I’d destroy them in the process. It’s all for the greater good.”
Now, Iwuji’s character is potentially dead following the collapse of his large prison ship. So, if he ever comes to face off Avengers and other MCU characters, it would have to be a relevant story, that potentially would be set quite later in the continuity, possibly post The Multiverse Saga.
It would be great to see if Iwuji’s High Evolutionary gets to evolve as a villain from hereon. However, now that his past and present are both given a conclusion in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it seems that his dying, in the end, makes up for a perfect ending, especially when viewing it as the end of Rocket’s story as well.
But it’s MCU, so, who knows? What do you think of Iwuji’s idea? Would you want him to take on Avengers? Maybe, in a What If…? episode.
