Supernatural Spookers
Ah, the supernatural – the only horror subgenre that has the power to scare me even after leaving the theater. While I can rationalize the non-existence of nightmare-haunting groundskeepers and criminals who embody toys, the validity of paranormal encounters will always be met with the tiniest slice of wonder. I’m not saying paranormal investigation shows aren’t staged or anything, but I will say that I can’t dismiss ghostly beings without factual evidence. Who’s to say there’s nothing larger than us in the universe? While you ponder those life-altering questions, here are some great supernatural flicks to stream that might help you come to terms with your fears!
When discussing the themes of paranoia and tension, Roman Polanski’s baby-mama-drama Rosemary’s Baby is a no brainer, blending a mother’s twisted thoughts of cultism with realistic doubt. It’s a classic that’s been remade and referenced by so many movies since, largely due to Mia Farrow’s bombshell performance.
Some newer films of note worth checking out are Resolution, Grave Encounters, and Banshee Chapter, all which petrified the timid child that dwells inside me. Resolution takes a very bare-bones approach to some really trippy horror, and might be what some consider an “intellectual” watch, but hot damn if it doesn’t finish with a bang. Grave Encounters is much more accessible, being a found footage horror movie about one of those ghost investigation shows, with Banshee Chapter being equally as accessible in its own “conspiracy theory” kind of way.
There are a few more worthy watches for you, including a James Wan flick I liked way more than most, but whatever, it’s Netflix Watch Instantly, it’s not like you’re paying per view!
- Resolution
- Insidious Chapter 2
- Event Horizon
- Grave Encounters
- Banshee Chapter
- Jug Face
- Haunt
- Rosemary’s Baby
- Carrie
Let me know which movies you string together for your own horror movie marathon this Halloween! Likewise, if I’ve missed anything egregious, be sure to drop a comment. I’m always looking for my next late-night watch!
