Slasher Flicks
If you want a good slasher movie, I totally suggest going back to the 80s when the likes of Jason and Freddy were in their prime, but don’t count out a few up-and-coming legends who are looking to make their bloody mark on the horror genre. I have to admit, this subgenre is lacking after a major Netflix wipe took down the likes of Chucky and a few other fan favorites, but I’ve sifted through what’s left and still found a few murderous adventures worth a slasher fan’s time.
If we’re talking 90s horror, We Craven’s Scream has to be mentioned as one of the most influential slasher movies of the decade. Without Scream, you’re never getting the wave of copycat franchises that provided popcorn-worthy thrills to bored teenagers, sparking a bloody resurgence of body-count horror. Plus, this is where Craven and Kevin Williamson established a biblical set of horror rules, and showed how thinking outside the box can make for an invigorating genre watch.
Two current slashers on the rise are Mick Taylor and The Collector, both of which you can stream via Netflix in their sequels Wolf Creek 2 and The Collection. They’re both violent, gory good times that emphasize fresh slaughterings we’ve never encountered in horror before, even if Wolf Creek 2 loses a bit of commentary in the carnage. Still, if you can get your hands on the original films, I highly suggest doing a double feature for half the price, renting one movie and streaming the other thanks to Netflix Watch Instantly.
Here’s a list of slasher flicks that are worth the slaying this Halloween, but before I move on, let me just say Stage Fright is one of my favorite horror films of the year so far. It’s a horror musical that features astonishing kills and the man, the myth, the legend – Meatloaf.
