Henry Cavill’s future as Superman has been in doubt for a while now. The beloved heartthrob may be considered by many to be the best Clark Kent of all-time, but stalled contract negotiations have led to a lot of uncertainty surrounding Warner Bros.’ relationship with the 36-year-old.

While all of this drama has unfolded offscreen, the British actor has taken on the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming series The Witcher. In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Cavill was asked about the difference about getting in shape to play Geralt of Rivia compared to Kal-El. At one point, the interviewer says that the actor is “also Superman” in addition to his part in the highly-anticipated fantasy show. And Cavill’s subsequent reaction is priceless.

His response to the claim is just to nod subtly with a strained smile on his face while saying “mhm” in the least reassuring way possible. He then appears to laugh afterwards, though the entire interaction is anything but funny to those who want to see Cavill with the red and yellow “S” on his chest again.

This awkward exchange is just the latest proof that the performer’s time as the iconic comic book character has come to an end. Despite what Zachary Levi might think, the writing is on the wall here. Cavill might not want to talk about the debacle right now, but it’s definitely a heavy question weighing on everyone’s mind. It’s even gotten to the point where fans are taking even the most innocuous of mistakes as clues that hint at the future of the role.

If Warner Bros. really is going through with another Superman film that doesn’t involve Cavill though, it’ll be a sad end to his time portraying the hero. Thankfully, he’s already moving on with his career and doesn’t appear to be letting the questions get him down. They sure are putting him in quite an uncomfortable position, though.
