Is Dwayne Johnson’s version of Black Adam a hero? That depends on how you interpret the word ‘hero,’ according to The Rock himself.
As part of his new Instagram Q&A series, Johnson fielded questions from fans regarding wrestling biopic Fighting With My Family, along with his role in Universal’s The Fate of the Furious. It wasn’t long though before the conversation turned toward Black Adam, where the former WWE star took the opportunity to tackle the character’s dubious moral code.
Painted as a villain in DC comics, early reports suggest Dwayne Johnson plans to extract the human element from Mighty Adam. As previously announced, Johnson’s hero (anti-hero?) will make his debut in Shazam! before headlining a Black Adam solo movie, the former of which is currently courting Lights Out helmer David F. Sandberg to direct.
Teasing his “cool, badass and fun plans with DC,” here’s how Johnson views his particular rendition of Black Adam, and how it compares to some of the studio’s more iconic villains – namely Lex Luthor, Joker, Brainiac and more.
If nothing else, fans can rest assured that Dwayne Johnson’s version of Black Adam won’t be afraid to take a deep dive into the character’s questionable moral code. Supposing all goes according to plan, the end result could be an anti-hero movie with real bite – one with a sense of depth and character, unlike, say, David Ayer’s botched Suicide Squad.
Speaking of which, Task Force X will get another shot at the big screen, possibly under the watchful eye of Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson. Still no update on that front just yet, but we’ll keep you posted as more information comes to light.
In terms of Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson is evidently pouring his heart and soul into the project. But will it be enough to deliver a competent end product? Time will tell.
