The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Gets A New Set Of Character Posters

With only a little more than a month to go until The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug hits theaters, it's likely that a lot more promotion for the film is going to be coming our way soon. Today, it looks like that final rush of promotion has started as we now have seven new character posters for the next movie in Peter Jackson's Middle-earth franchise.

With only a little more than a month to go until The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug hits theaters, it’s likely that a lot more promotion for the film is going to be coming our way soon. Today, it looks like that final rush of promotion has started as we now have seven new character posters for the next movie in Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth franchise.

All of these posters are really attractive sheets, just as we’ve come to expect from the Middle-earth films. Last year’s IMAX-exclusive posters for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey are some of my favorite pieces of film art, and while these aren’t quite on that level, I definitely wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a few of these character posters.

My favorites are the ones of Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman. Perhaps I’m a sucker for bow-wielders, but those two stand out as the best. The way Bloom is pointing his arrow straight forward is absolutely menacing. While I’d prefer Evans to be looking forward as well, Bard the Bowman is one of my favorite characters, and this poster properly shows the gruff look that I’ve always imagined for the future slayer of Smaug.

While all seven of these posters are excellent, it would be great to have a poster for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug. That’s probably a bit too much to ask for though, especially considering the dragon was barely seen in the first film. Then again, we got to hear him speak in the recent trailer, so there could still be a Smaug poster headed our way between now and the film’s release.
