Idris Elba Eyed For Titular Villain Role In X-Men: Apocalypse?

X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer's hotly anticipated follow-up to this year's X-Men: Days of Future Past, won't hit theaters until summer 2016, but with production expected to start sometime early next year we're already being treated to a wave of potential new casting information. This past week we received word that Singer was looking at a handful of actors for younger versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey, and now we've got an update who may play the titular villain himself.

I’m talking, of course, about his role as Heimdall, the gatekeeper of Asgard in Marvel Studios’ Thor films. He’ll make a brief appearance in next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and will presumably play a part in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok as well. Can Elba handle roles in two flagship comic book franchises? I guess it’s possible (he did appear in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which hit theaters the same year as the first Thor), but whether or not Disney lets it happen is another story.

In any case, I’d be happy to see Elba in the role. In fact, I hope he gets it, and then plays John Stewart in 2020’s Green Lantern reboot as well, effectively pulling a hat-trick and starring in the “big three” superhero cinematic universes.

Tell us, would you like to see Idris Elba play Apocalypse? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more news concerning the other two mystery names that are supposedly in contention for the role.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit theaters on May 27th, 2016.
