Ridley Scott and Fox have at last found a worthy scribe for the sequel to their 2012 galactic epic, Prometheus. The two are eyeing Jack Paglen, writer of Wally Pfister’s first directorial effort Transcendence, which will be released in April of next year.

Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are expected to return as Elizabeth Shaw and android David. Though it is still uncertain if Ridley Scott will be directing, he will be producing with his company Scott Free Productions.

Not much is known of the sequel’s plot. All Scott has revealed in interviews is that while the first film was heavily rooted in the Alien franchise, the second instalment will stray farther.

Prometheus was written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, and brought in over $400 million worldwide. Jack Paglen has a lot to live up to with the sequel, especially so since there are many, both fans and detractors, who feel an expansion of the story should not move forward at all.

No matter what your opinion was of Prometheus, the film undeniably succeeded in putting forth more questions than it did answers. Paglen will have to walk a fine line between over-complicating and muddling the details, and wrapping everything up neatly with abundant simple explanations.

In taking on such an ambitious, large scale project, Ridley Scott and Fox cannot rely on a decent screenwriter and the return of favorite characters from the first instalment alone. They need to show audiences that what they have in store in going to be something truly remarkable, and not just a halfhearted attempt to bring in an even higher profit. The Prometheus sequel has a lot to live up to, and a lot to prove.
