Battling the odds, the elements and one another are Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal, who feature in the latest trio of images from Kormakur’s icy thriller. The majority of filming took place the Italian Alps, with Nepal and the surrounding Himalayan region also used as touch points. Clarke is on board to play climbing guide Rob Hall, with Josh Brolin setting the Infinity Gauntlet to one side for the time being to assume the role of Hall’s client.

In tandem with the batch of stills is the very first trailer for the near-impossible adventure, which begins by detailing just how dangerous assailing the titular mountain really is. Mind you, the film’s core cast manage to reach the summit in one piece, it’s only when the aforementioned blizzard comes rolling off the Himalayas that their lives are thrust into danger.

If you’re starting to experience déjà vu, fear not: Everest‘s inspiring plot also underpins Jon Krakauer’s best-selling novel Into Thin Air, which recounted the hiking disaster back in ’97. As for Kormakur’s big-screen feature, the Oscar hopeful caps off its star-studded ensemble with Robin Wright, Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly and Thomas M. Wright

Releasing in both 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX, Everest is set to arrive in theaters on September 18.

Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal. They are joined by Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly and Thomas M. Wright.
