Last month, something wonderful happened on Twitter. Star Wars legend Mark Hamill began talking about a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with writer/director James Gunn and the conversation ended with things getting potentially more professional, as the pair agreed to meet up to discuss it. Obviously, fans kept their fingers crossed that something would come from this meeting. Luke Skywalker teaming-up with Star-Lord? Yes, please!
Now, in a recent interview with ET Canada, Hamill has shed some light on where the situation stands at the moment, revealing that he’s yet to sit down with Gunn due to the director being busy. However, he did make clear that he would still be interested, thanking social media for making things like this possible:
“We talked a little on direct message and he was going out of town and I said, ‘I’d love to meet you anytime,’ and I’m not trying to lobby for a part, just as a neighbor and a friend,” Hamill said.
“So, no, I haven’t met him, and I don’t know if anything will come of it, but that just shows you, that’s an example, of how social media has changed our world. You wind up being friends with some author or political pundit that you’ve never met, because if you follow them, you can talk privately. I love that, and I do love the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but they don’t need me, they’ve got such a talented cast.”
Things then got even more exciting when James Gunn responded to Hamill’s ET interview and promised that, though he couldn’t do it at the moment, he’s definitely planning on meeting the actor about a potential role in Guardians Vol. 3 at some point. “I am in Atlanta but I really DO want to grab that cup of coffee with @HamillHimself when I’m back!” he Tweeted.
Having Hamill cameo in the next Guardians of the Galaxy would be exciting on so many levels. Not only would it mark a crossover of two great sci-fi film franchises, but it would also be fun to see the actor appear in the MCU. As well as Star Wars, Hamill is most known for his long-running portrayal of the Joker for DC, so it’d be pretty fan-pleasing to have him work for Marvel, too.
Of course, Hamill having a cameo in Guardians Vol. 3 would only be the latest in a long line of roles for famous actors and actresses in the franchise. Others include Sylvester Stallone, Glenn Close, Kurt Russell, David Hasselhoff, Ving Rhames, Michelle Yeoh and even the voice of Miley Cyrus.
Gunn and Hamill have got a little while to make it work, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn’t set to land in cinemas until 2020, but we’ll be sure to let you know if and when anything concrete comes of this. In the meantime, keep those fingers crossed.
