The internet is currently still recovering from the DC bombshell that broke this morning, outlining Warner Brothers’ official slate of DC Comics films planned for release between 2016 and 2020. With that news came the announcements of solo films for Wonder Woman, the Suicide Squad, The Flash, Cyborg, Green Lantern, and Aquaman, as well as news that solo pics for Batman and Superman are on the way as well, despite not having release dates.
Buried within that news was final confirmation that Jason Momoa will in fact play Aquaman in the solo film slated for release in 2018. This follows months of endless speculation about the Game of Thrones alum landing the role of DC’s Atlantean hero, which came with no help from Momoa himself. The actor flat out refused to confirm or deny his involvement, but finally remedied that today via Instagram:
This news has now been followed up with a possible Aquaman update from The Aquaman Shrine, a site devoted to Aquaman movie and comics updates. According to their sources, the Aquaman film will include characters like Aquaman’s wife Mera, his evil half-brother Orm, supervillain Black Manta, and The Trench. For those unfamiliar, the Trench were an underwater carnivorous race introduced in the New 52 Aquaman relaunch, dubbed Aquaman: The Trench and written by Geoff Johns. You can read more specifics about that story on the DC Wikia page here.
Of course, with two screenwriters currently writing two competing Aquaman scripts, any of these details could change. However, it’s worth noting that the New 52 story arcs seem to be a big basis for the DC Cinematic Universe. Man of Steel took several cues from the Superman relaunch, as will Wonder Woman’s origin in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So, it’s not too outlandish to think that Aquaman will borrow from the New 52 as well.
Tell us, are you happy to hear that Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman? And what are your thoughts on these possible supporting characters? Let us know in the comments below.
While it does not yet have an official release date, Aquaman is scheduled to swim into theaters in 2018.
