The latest news comes courtesy of That Hashtag Show, who are reporting that one of their sources has seen John Slattery filming scenes with Robert Downey Jr.  Slattery, of course, plays Howard Stark, the deceased father of Tony with whom he had a notoriously fractious relationship. Despite being dead, he’s featured in Iron Man 2, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War and now, it seems like he’s going to make an appearance in Avengers 4. The real question at this point, though, is in what capacity?

There are repeated rumors that the upcoming movie will heavily feature time travel, with the characters going back through major events in the MCU in order to prevent Thanos from ever being able to acquire all of the Infinity Stones. If this is the case, we may see Stark visiting his father in the past, or perhaps going so far as to prevent the car crash which killed both of his parents?

The alternative explanation is that this is going to be another use of Tony’s B.A.R.F. technology. Seen in Civil War, the B.A.R.F. (Binary Augmented Retro-Framing) device is a therapeutic instrument designed to allow the user to project and alter their traumatic memories. Could we be seeing the technology returning in Avengers 4 in order to allow Stark to delve deeper into his past and understand his father’s relationship with the Tesseract (aka the Space Stone)? It’s possible.

Either way, John Slattery’s a great actor and a fine addition to the cast. And whether Avengers 4 is a time-traveling adventure or not, it’ll certainly be improved by having him on board.
