Considering Thanos met his demise not once, but twice in this year’s Avengers: Endgame, it seemed all but certain that Josh Brolin’s time in the MCU was up. Yet, the Avengers saga wasn’t the only superhero franchise the actor has under his belt, as his take on Cable in last year’s Deadpool 2 was widely praised by critics and fans alike. Now that Disney has purchased Fox and all of the X-Men characters are back at the House of Ideas, what are the chances we could see the time-traveling mutant hop his way into the MCU? Well, if the actor should have his way, it would be a certainty.
While speaking recently at ACE Comic Con Seattle, Brolin was asked by a fan if he planned to return to the MCU in Deadpool 3 now that Disney has purchased Fox, and here’s what he said:
“Wait, Disney bought Fox?!” he joked. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m actually, I’ve been calling them, like, ‘What’s the deal with Cable, man?’ Seriously, 100 percent serious. They’re figuring it out. It’s a big world now, it just got much, much bigger. So who knows?”
Marvel Studios has made it clear that they’re intending to continue onward with the Merc with a Mouth’s franchise, it’s just a little bit murky at the moment how they’re planning to do so. We know Ryan Reynolds is surely coming back, but rumors suggest Deadpool could get a third standalone movie, or he could appear in his own Disney Plus streaming show, which would slowly weave him into the franchise at large. There’s even a chance the Regenerating Degenerate could pop up in a future Spider-Man/Wolverine team up film, as wild as that sounds.
Where Josh Brolin’s Cable could fit into all of this is anyone’s guess at the moment. After all, Disney has brought on much smarter people at a much higher pay grade to figure out the minutia of this merger. At the moment, anything seems possible, so we shouldn’t write off Brolin’s hope to return just yet. The good news is if he does come back, that also leaves the door open for Zazie Beetz’s reappearance as Domino, which I consider to be the highlight performance of Deadpool 2.
It’s unlikely that we’ll hear any future updates on Cable, Deadpool or Domino in the immediate future, but Marvel surely won’t leave the characters on the shelf for long.
