Thanos Infinity War

Josh Brolin Down To Play Thanos In Marvel’s Eternals Movie

After appearing in cameos in the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Josh Brolin finally got to show what he can really do as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and he left Marvel fans and critics mightily impressed with his surprisingly layered performance as the Mad Titan. And though the character achieved his life's ambition in the film, if it was up to Brolin himself, he'd be happy to play him again in the upcoming Eternals movie.

And though the character achieved his life’s ambition in the film, if it was up to Brolin himself, he’d be happy to play him again in the upcoming Eternals movie.

While speaking to Screen Rant, the topic came up and the actor revealed that he didn’t know the studio was working on the project. He immediately seemed to be excited by the idea, though, and asked if Thanos is expected to appear in the pic. In a more elaborate response, Brolin explained that he was surprised by how much he enjoyed playing the villain and is looking forward to returning to the character for Avengers 4‘s reshoots.

“Yeah, you know what, I don’t know what the future brings and who knows, but [I] love the idea of something infinite like this. I’ve never been involved in sequels. The fact that we’ve done some of Avengers 2, oh sorry, Avengers 4 but Infinity War 2, I’m going back. I’m going to do more, and we’re going to do some reshoots and all that.

So, I’m excited about all that. I love the Russos. I love working on the Avengers. I didn’t think I was going to and I actually loved it. I didn’t even like it. I loved it. I like playing that character. It’s a Brando-esqe, Apocalyptic Now character and it’s fun, but you know, I don’t know. I don’t know what the future holds. I’ve been surprised my entire career so we’ll see.”

This is interesting news, as Brolin’s attitude here seems at odds with his previous comments. He said back in April that part of the appeal of playing Thanos for him was how it was a “finite” job as he didn’t believe he would be asked back after Avengers 4. Now, it seems he’s embraced the “infinite” possibilities of the Marvel universe.

For those who don’t know, Eternals is based around the titular alien race to which Thanos belongs. The species were alluded to in Infinity War, as was the Mad Titan’s history as an outsider amongst his own people. Due to how well Thanos has gone down, you’d think he might play a major role in the film. Perhaps it could even take the form of a prequel and explore what turned him into a genocidal maniac.

Though it’s not far enough along to have a director or a release date, a script for Eternals is currently being worked on and Kevin Feige has revealed that the film is likely to arrive in Phase Four, so we should learn more soon. In the meantime, though, take to the comments section and let us know if you’d like to see Brolin reprise the role.
